How to extract audio from a video without uploading it
Published · FileForge
A lecture, interview, or meeting recording may be useful even when you do not need the picture. Saving just the audio can make the recording easier to listen to and share. If it contains private conversations, keeping the conversion on your own device avoids sending the source video to a conversion service.
Choose the audio format for the next task
MP3 is a practical choice for everyday listening because many phones, players, and messaging apps support it. WAV is useful when another editor needs uncompressed audio, but it can be much larger. Neither format recovers information that the original recording never captured: converting a low-quality source to WAV does not make speech clearer.
FileForge Extract Audio offers MP3, WAV, OGG, AAC, and FLAC. Choose a format your recipient or editor accepts, then use a sample to check compatibility. For spoken recordings, listen to quiet speakers and background noise rather than judging only by the loudest section.
Extract the sound in FileForge
Open Extract Audio and choose the local video. Use the preview to confirm you picked the right recording. Select the output format and the bitrate where the tool offers it, then run the extraction. The first run needs to download the media-processing code; keep the tab open while it prepares and works.
When the result appears, play it and download a separate copy. The source file is read on your device rather than uploaded for conversion. A long recording can still take time and memory, especially on a phone, so keep the original and use a desktop for heavier work.
Trim out the part you actually need
To save only a passage, open Trim Media with the recording. Move the preview to the desired start and use Set start at playhead; repeat at the desired end. You can also enter the times directly. Check that the end comes after the start and that the excerpt includes the complete sentence or musical phrase.
The trim tool uses a fast copying approach, so cuts may not land exactly on every requested frame for all media formats. Listen to both boundaries after downloading. If you need sample-accurate audio edits, fades, or detailed noise cleanup, a dedicated audio editor is a better next step.
Check the result before sharing
Play the beginning, middle, and end. Confirm that both channels sound right and that the file opens in the app the recipient will use. Compare its size with the original, but do not assume every extraction will be smaller: uncompressed WAV can exceed the size of a compressed video.
Private conversion does not determine whether you have permission to share a conversation. Follow consent and workplace rules, remove unnecessary personal material, and save sensitive recordings in an appropriately protected location. No-upload processing avoids the conversion transfer; it does not secure a file after you distribute it.

Frequently asked questions
- Does extracting audio change the original video?
- No. FileForge creates a separate audio download; retain the source video for reference.
- Why can a WAV file be larger than the video?
- WAV output can contain uncompressed audio, while the source video may use highly compressed sound.
- Can I use it without a connection?
- After the page and media-processing code have loaded, the conversion works locally. A first visit or reload may require a connection.
